Jodhpur is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is called the Gateway to Thar, as is literally on the edge of the Thar Desert. It is also known as Sun City because sun shines almost everyday in the year. Jodhpur is a remarkable city which dates back to the year 1459 AD. Jodhpur is also known as the Blue City because most houses in the old city are shades of blue. The old city of Jodhpur is bordered by a wide stone wall which has six huge gates called Nagauri gate, Merati gate, Sojati gate, Jalori gate, Siwanchi gate and Chand Pol.
The forts and palaces, temples and havelis, culture and tradition, spices and fabrics, color and texture, a booming handicrafts industry, all add up to make this historic city worth a visit. A number of chronological monuments dot the city and surrounding. Umaid Bhawan palace, Mehrangarh fort, Jaswant thada, Osiyan temple, these are the monuments and cultural places and the most beautiful places are Girdikot and Sardar market, Mahamandir , mandore temple and government museum. Many people of different castes celebrate different fairs and festivals which are Marwar festival, Ganguar and teej, Nag panchami faie,Mahaveer jayanti, Shietla Mata, Baba Ram Dev. There are some museums that include galleries devoted to howdahs (elephant-mounted seats), palanquins, fine arts, weaponry, and the inevitable Turban Gallery. Mehrangarh forth is the largest fort in all Rajasthan.
Jodhpur is well linked by road, rail and air to all main cities and towns. It is connected by air from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur and the airport is about 5 km from the city centre. It is well connected by direct trains from all metros and major cities in India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Lucknow, Kalka, Jammu, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. You can reach Jodhpur by taxi and car too. |
