Pokharan is a city and a municipality located in Jaisalmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is a remote location in the Thar Desert region and served as the test site for India's first underground nuclear weapon detonation. Pokharan-II refers to test explosions of five nuclear devices, three on 11 May and two on 13 May 1998, conducted by India at the Pokhran test range.
Pokhran is an apex research and testing site of the Indian nuclear programme.On 18 May 1974, India exploded its first nuclear device code named Operation Smiling Buddha, formally called the "Peaceful Nuclear Explosive (PNE)" by Indian Government. After about a quarter century, on Buddha Jayanti, 11 May 1998, Operation Shakti was carried out. Shakti is also the name of the Hindu Goddess of strength. Shakti was the codename of a thermonuclear device that was exploded in Pokhran as part of Pokhran-II.
The team was headed by Rajagopala Chidambaram, consist of well known scientists. Fort Pokaran, the 14th century citadel also known as "Balagarh", stands amidst the Thar Desert. This monument is the premier fort of the chief of the Champawats, the clan of Rathores of the state of Marwar-Jodhpur. Pokharan is a pilgrimage site in Jainism.
