Jaisalmer Fort - Rajasthan Travel Guide

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest of desert forts of the world. Jaisalmer fort is situated in jaisalmer city. The fort was built by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, in 1156 AD from where it derives it name. This is the world's only living fort and about a quarter of city's population live in the fort. At one point of time the entire population of Jaisalmer used to live within the fort but with the increase in the population, people were forced to move out and find shelter under the foot of the Trikuta Hill. It is one of the best world’s monuments.

It’s massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, and turns into magical honey-gold when sun set naming it as "Golden Fort". It is one of the most magnificent attractions is the Jaisalmer Fort known as the "Sonar Kila" due to the yellow stone it was built out of. Main attraction inside the wall is Raj mahal, Jain temples and laxminath temple, 4 massive gateways and Merchant havelis etc. There are numerous elaborate havelis designed from golden sandstone through out the city.

After arriving Jaisalmer you can get other means of transportation. Many places can be reached through few minnutes of walk other else your can get jeep, taxi, and rickshaws too. You can also visit local places by camel too and it is full with funn and enjoyment. For local rickshaw you have to do bargaining to reduce the amount. Taxi and car is very comfortable, easy and convinent but the problem is, it is double expensive than rickshaw and camel riding. So tourists have to decide in which they will comfort according to their budget.
