The Lohagarh fort is located in the heart of the old city of Bharatpur. Lohagarh Fort built by Maharaja Suraj Mal is one of the strongest forts situated in the district of Bharatpur in Rajasthan. It is very different from the other forts in Rajasthan state, there is no flamboyance associated to fort but it generates an aura of strength and magnificence. The fort is surrounded with moat which was previously filled with water to ward off the enemy attacks. The sandy ramparts were strengthened by sandy battlements, thus the enemy guns proved of no avail.
One of the gates of the fort has four pillars and is called Chowburja while the other is made of Ashtadhatu (eight metals). The Ashtadhatu gate has paintings of elephants on it. This gate of Lohagarh has interesting history associated with it. Originally it belonged to the Fort of Chittaurgarh.
There are several monuments of tourist interest inside the fort, viz. Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. Moti Mahal and the Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj towers were erected to commemorate the victories over the British and the Mughals. There is no sign of lavishness in this fort. The colossal look of the fort vies for its might.
