Manak Chowk is the chief market place exterior to Jaisalmer Fort and is the centre to local activity. The prominent engraved havelis are to be found at a short distance from this Chowk. Each havelis facade differs from each other. Built mostly during the 18th and 19th centuries, the monument in the havelis of Jaisalmer is of a very advanced value. The Chowk was a popular Sadar Mandi (grain-market), and a beehive of trade. Traders from distant lands like Persia, Iraq, Egypt and Arabia visited the city for trade. It is very famous market in Jaisalmer city which is near to the Jaisalmer Fort.
Patwon-ki-Haveli is one of the loveliest havelis with a beautiful latticed frontage. Salim Singh-ki-Haveli is just 3 centuries old, and is still lived in. Its domed roof is held up by well carved brackets in the shape of peacocks. Two architect brothers each focusing on different sides is built in the royal mansions named-- Nathmalji-Ki-Haveli. Yellow sandstone tuskers guard the havelis. These Havelis collect the narrow, cobbled alleys of the city, and their fine carved balconies meet across the lanes of this charming town. Manak Chowk is very popular Chowk among the other in Jaisalmer which is well connected by means of transportation and has well managed highways. You can easily travel by local buses, jeep, taxi, car etc. Among them the most suitable is by booking personal taxi and jeep. Rickshaw is cheapest and suitable for short journey not for long distance journey. Visiting Jaisalmer will be very interesting and amazing journey because of the beautiful views and luxury hotels and their wonderful co-ordination by the people. |
