Osian is an ancient town, an oasis in the Thar Desert, 65 kilometers from Jodhpur. This place is also known as Khajuraho of Rajasthan. There are many ruined Brahmanical and Jain temples dating from the 8th to 11th centuries. The Surya or Sun Temple and the later Kali temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and the main Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira beautify this place.
The Osian village is an important pilgrimage for Osian Jian community. There is the Mahavira temple, build in A. D. 783 by Gurjara Pratihara King Vatsaraja, is an important tirtha for Jain community. In the Mahavira temple there is a niche that contains very beautiful sculptures. They are worshipped by Oswal Jain, as adhisthatyaka - devetas. There is also one more old and important temple build by Upaldev who is the brother of Raja Punj the son of King 'Bheemsain' (king of Bhinmal); the Sachiya Mata Temple. This temple is adorned with features of a Jain temple, reflects the history of their time.
Many clan of the Jain community perform their 'mundan sanskar' there. This small and elegant town, Osian, have importance in the Jain community. This place is considered to be Holy places of Jain community.
