Sawai Madhopur is a city and a municipality in the Sawai Madhopur District of Rajasthan. Sawai Madhopur was built as a unique city by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur during 1750–1768, and named the city after his own name. Today Sawai Madhopur is known for Ranthambhor, a Wildlife reserve and a place of historical importance.
In Rajasthan, the Chauhan king, Govinda the grandson of Prithviraj Chauhan established himself at Ranthambhore. Following disturbances after the death of Iltutmish, Vagbhatta besieged the fort of Ranthambhor.
