Arts and Crafts of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is such a haven for men and women who are fans of fine jewelries. Being India’s important source of precious and semi precious stones such as ruby, emerald, amethyst, and topaz, it is home to a wide variety of jewelries that are top notch in design and craftsmanship. Each region boasts its own design. In urban areas, where most people usually crave for valuable metals, stones are set on enameled gold or silver. They call the process of setting these stones in gold ornaments as Kundan, whereas Meenakari is the art of enameling metals. These two processes produce jewelries in two beautiful surfaces, the metal enamel at the back and the set stones in front. Bangles are also widely produced as they favorites among women.

Rajasthan is also known for wall paintings. Today, synthetic colors are widely used as they are easy to prepare but many traditional painters still prefer natural paint materials such as vegetable dyes and mineral that produce a rich, vibrant and classy finish to the wall paintings. The cost varies depending on the craftsmanship of each artist.  Each artist has his/her own way and follow a different process in preparing the walls and in expressing objects through color variation and expression of balance and space.

This part of India also has a long tradition of textile making. It is here where richly woven and colored fabrics can be found. There is so much to choose from that picking can be quite time consuming. Most famous designs are tie and dye and hand-block prints. Sarees and shawls, which are either cotton or silk and are generally embroidered, are truly eye catching. They are commonly embellished with colored stones and embroidered with silken threads in floral patterns and traditional symbols and figures.  If it is not in your body that you want these rich fabrics to warp around, they can also be used as cushion covers or simply hang them in walls as ornaments.
